A vacancy for a Structural Engineer has become available within a well established organisation in Kempton Park. The incumbent will be required to manage civil engineering projects related to structural engineering. This includes planning, organizing and control simple and complex projects and make recommendation on alternate solutions to engineering problems, institute changes in methods or design. To manage the Structural Engineering team including CAD staff. This includes leading all operations relating to planning, designing and execution of structural engineering projects that the company is contracted on. Structural Engineer is responsible for designing any kind of structure so that it can fulfill a specific purpose, and remain safe, economic and functioning throughout its intended lifetime. Structural engineering is about investigating both the immediate loads and demands on the structure, as well as any likely future changes, and ensuring a structure is designed to withstand those loads.

Key Responsibilities
Civil Engineering duties

• Undertaking technical and feasibility studies including site investigations
• Using a range of computer packages for developing detailed designs
• Undertaking complex and repetitive calculations
• Liaising with clients and a variety of professionals including architects, contractors, etc.
• Compiling job specs and supervising tendering procedures
• Resolving design and development problems

• Scheduling material and equipment purchases and delivery
• Analyse survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, and other geologic data to plan projects.
• Plan and design transportation or hydraulic systems and structures, following

construction and government standards, using design software and drawing tools

Project Management which entails the following responsibilities:

Project preparation

• Investigates sites to work out the most suitable foundation for a proposed construction
• Research and advise on the best engineering solution to meet with a client's needs and budget
• Operate computers to assist with the design of civil engineering projects
• Analyse risks associated with natural disasters including wind, fire and floods and design structures and services to meet appropriate standards
• Produce detailed designs and documentation for the construction and implementation of civil engineering projects

Project Implementation

• Organise the delivery of material, plant and equipment needed for the construction project and supervise the labour.
• Develop detailed programmes for the coordination of site activities.
• Communicate with other engineers, landscape architects and environmental scientists.
• Coordinate and direct research development and testing of materials, processes or systems related to civil engineering works.
• Research, advise on and plan the control and minimisation of air, water and solid waste pollution, and the management of water.

Project Evaluation and reporting

• Supervise the testing and commissioning of completed works.
• Arrange for geological and physical investigations and carry out feasibility studies.
• Analyse and interpret reports on loading, labour, productivity, quality, materials and performance
• Preparation of management reports as required.


• Prepare tender and contract documents.
• Prepare and analyse costing for tenders by evaluating tenders and doing site inspections with prospective renderers.

Financial/cost Management

• Prepare engineering calculations required for the design of projects and supervise the drafting.
• Ensuring projects run smoothly and structures are completed within budget and on time.budget.


• Stay abreast of latest advancements and legislation in field of work.
• Ensure implementation of self-development plans.
• Maintain awareness of the different building contracts in use.
• Understand the implications of health and safety regulations.

Knowledge, experience and personal competencies
Knowledge and experience
• BSC/B Eng/ B Tech in Civil Engineering
• Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Civil Engineering field specifically on structural division
• Must have at least 5 years’ experience as a senior manager.
• Working knowledge of AutoCad, MS project and related software.
• Excellent knowledge of building analysis and design software for concrete, steel and wood.
• Excellent communication, organizational skills and strong leadership skills
• Need to display keen commercial awareness and understand the business implications of the decisions you make.
• Compulsory registration as a Professional Engineer
• Proven track record of successful project engineering in a similar level. Contract building law applied in the profession
